High flux source of cold rubidium atoms

چکیده
We report on the production of a continuous, slow, and cold beam of Rb atoms with an extremely high flux of 3.2 1012 atoms/s, a transverse temperature of 3 mK, and a longitudinal temperature of 90 mK. We describe the apparatus created to generate the atom beam. Hot atoms are emitted from a rubidium candlestick atomic beam source and transversely cooled and collimated by a 20 cm long atomic collimator section, boosting overall beam flux by a factor of 50. The Rb atomic beam is then decelerated and longitudinally cooled by a 1 m long Zeeman slower. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2069651

Candlestick rubidium beam source
Many atomic physics laboratories rely on beams of alkali atoms for their experiments, for example in the atom optics and laser cooling communities. Rubidium is commonly used, due to the fortunate coincidence of the dipole resonant transition with the optimum output wavelength of low-cost AlGaAs semiconductor lasers. Suitable rubidium beams can easily be produced with effusive ovens, but many ex...
متن کاملContinuous transfer and laser guiding between two cold atom traps
We have demonstrated and modeled a simple and efficient method to transfer atoms from a first Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) to a second one. Two independent setups, with cesium and rubidium atoms respectively, have shown that a high power and slightly diverging laser beam optimizes the transfer between the two traps when its frequency is red-detuned from the atomic transition. This pushing laser e...

the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract. We have constructed and modeled a simple and efficient source of slow atoms. From a background vapour loaded magneto-optical trap, a thin laser beam extracts a continuous jet of cold rubidium atoms. In this setup, the extraction column that is typical to leaking MOT systems is created without any optical parts placed inside t...
متن کاملRealization of a magnetically guided atomic beam in the collisional regime.
We describe the realization of a magnetically guided beam of cold rubidium atoms, with a flux of 7 x 10(9) atoms/s, a temperature of 400 microK, and a mean velocity of 1 m/s. The rate of elastic collisions within the beam is sufficient to ensure thermalization. We show that the evaporation induced by a radio-frequency wave leads to appreciable cooling and an increase in the phase space density....
متن کاملBright, guided molecular beam with hydrodynamic enhancement.
The authors realize a novel high flux source of cold atoms and molecules employing hydrodynamic enhancement of an effusive aperture at cryogenic temperatures. Molecular oxygen from the source is coupled to a magnetic guide, delivering a cold, continuous, guided flux of 3 x 10(12) O(2) s(-1). The dynamics of the source are studied by creating and spectroscopically analyzing high flux beams of at...
